Sri Lankan Goraka fruit  

- Goraka (Garcinia quaesita)has been used in Sri Lanka for culinary and medicinal purposes since ancient times. Young Goraka fruits are green in colour, and when ripe, they turn yellow. When the fruits are fully ripe, they are collected, cut in half, deseeded, and sun-dried for a day. The sun-dried fruit halves are smoked until black, then rubbed with a salt and oil mixture before being transferred to earthenware pots and tightly sealed. These will last for years.
 

Goraka Paste

- The main ingredients for Goraka paste are dried goraka, water, and salt, and it is ideal for fish ambulthiyal, kiri hodi, and a variety of other dishes. All you need is a dash of goraka paste to complete your dish.

Goraka is also used to preserve food and it is an important component in the preparation of "Fish abulthiyal," which has a shelf life of about 7 days at room temperature. Goraka also increases the toughness of the fish.  

Medicinal Uses      

-Goraka is used in Ayurvedic medicine for its antiseptic and therapeutic properties. It is used to aid digestion, and a decoction made from it is used to treat Arthritis and certain uterine diseases. It is also used to treat ulcers, weak gums, and bowel problems. Goraka boosts the immune system, lowers high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and protects the body from cancer.
