Food and culinary uses
-It is a must-have ingredient in all seafood-loving Sri Lankan kitchens. The dried fruit is used as a souring agent in famous fish curries and other seafood preparations from South India and Sri Lanka and has been shown to reduce histamine levels in fish by 80%. Goraka is also used to preserve food and it is an important component in the preparation of "Fish abulthiyal," which has a shelf life of about 7 days at room temperature. Goraka also increases the toughness of the fish.
Medicinal Uses
-Goraka is used in Ayurvedic medicine for its antiseptic and therapeutic properties. It is used to aid digestion, and a decoction made from it is used to treat Arthritis and certain uterine diseases. It is also used to treat ulcers, weak gums, and bowel problems. Goraka boosts the immune system, lowers high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and protects the body from cancer.
